New School Board Member Appointed
The Fox Chapel Area Board of School Directors has appointed former School Board member Robert Mauro to fulfill the unexpired term of Charles R. “Chip” Burke Jr. The Board appointed Mauro at a special meeting September 12, 2016. He will represent Region III of the school district that includes all of Aspinwall Borough and Blawnox Borough, Wards 1 and 5 of O’Hara Township, and Districts 1 and 3 of Fox Chapel Borough. Mauro’s term of office will run until December 2017. Mauro, who had served on the School Board from 2008 to 2015, resigned from the Board last September because he was moving out of the region he represented at that time (Region II).
According to Fox Chapel Area School Board President Terry Wirginis, the Board was very pleased with the number of candidates who applied, as well as their extensive credentials. “This was a very difficult decision, especially because the Board was fortunate to have nine highly-qualified candidates,” Wirginis said. “The Board truly valued each candidate’s strengths.”
However, Mauro’s previous service on the School Board set him apart. In the past, Mauro served as the Board’s personnel representative. He also has knowledge of the renovation projects the district is currently undertaking, as well as experience with the school budget process and with state and federal mandates with which the district must comply.
“Bob’s prior experience on the school Board and his knowledge of the district has always been a very valuable asset to the Fox Chapel Area School District,” Wirginis said. He also pointed out that the Board members truly appreciated the interest of the other candidates and that “We hope the other applicants will continue to be involved in the district as we strive to make the Fox Chapel Area School District the best place for education and for our children.”
Mauro, an attorney, is a managing partner of Meyer, Unkovic & Scott LLP in downtown Pittsburgh, where he has been employed since 1975. In addition, he has served as the past president of the Fox Chapel Area Youth Basketball Association and also coached little league and pony league baseball teams in the Fox Chapel area. He is also a former member of the board of directors of the Pittsburgh Field Club. Mauro, a resident of Aspinwall Borough, has three children (Craig, Reid, and Emily), all of whom are graduates of Fox Chapel Area High School and Cornell University.
Burke’s resignation was accepted by the School Board at its August 15, 2016, combined agenda study session and regular business meeting. Burke served on the Board since October of 2004. He resigned because he is moving out of the district.
