27th Annual FCASD Telethon
Fox Chapel Area School District students will hold their 27th annual telethon Friday, December 23, 2016, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. For the second year in a row, the telethon will raise money for Live Like Lou, which was founded by two parents (Suzanne and Neil Alexander) in the Fox Chapel Area School District to help ALS patients and their families in Western Pennsylvania. The telethon will involve students from all six schools in the Fox Chapel Area School District (Fairview, Hartwood, Kerr, and O’Hara elementaries; Dorseyville Middle School; and Fox Chapel Area High School). Student, teacher, parent, and community representatives will be participating in the telethon benefitting Live Like Lou by making donations during the live event. Additionally, Suzanne will appear as part of the telethon and Pittsburgh Pirates skipper Clint Hurdle will also be sharing a video message. Hurdle was a personal friend of Neil (who passed away in 2015) and is a big advocate of Live Like Lou. Fox Chapel Area students will also be sharing a video from a visit to the Live Like Lou Center for ALS Research at the University of Pittsburgh. The telethon will also feature some throwback clips from telethons from previous years.
The public is also invited to make donations through the Live Like Lou website at http://www.livelikelou.org/2016/11/01/fctelethon/. Be sure to check “Fox Chapel Area Schools” in “Fundraiser your donation supports” from the dropdown menu. Anyone wishing to donate by check can make the check out to “Live Like Lou” and drop it off at any of the district’s schools during school hours.
This year, the telethon will be available in high definition for the first time and will be streamed live on the “Swift Fox Media” YouTube channel. The link to the broadcast will be available on both the district’s website (www.fcasd.edu) and Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/foxchapelarea). Following the broadcast, the telethon can be viewed on the district’s website and on the Swift Fox Media YouTube channel. Verizon FIOS cable customers will be able to see the telethon live on Channel 28 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. December 23. The telethon will also be rebroadcast every day (December 23-January 1) through Verizon FIOS and Comcast (Channels 96 or 98) from 4-6 p.m.
The telethon is coordinated by the marketing/management and television production students of the high school who plan and produce the event.
Live Like Lou, a fund of The Pittsburgh Foundation, is a local organization focused on raising awareness of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease), supporting scientific research targeted at finding a cure, and providing care for ALS patients and their families in Western Pennsylvania. Specifically, the Fox Chapel Area telethon will support Live Like Lou Patient Care Fund grants, the Iron Horse Awards for Kids grants, and the Live Like Lou Center for ALS Research. Neil’s wife Suzanne continues the work of this important charity in his honor.
The students in the Fox Chapel Area School District have donated nearly $696,000 to various local and regional charities through their annual telethon over the last 26 years.
