District Forum Meeting Tuesday on Proposed Property Tax Legislation
The Fox Chapel Area District Forum has called a special meeting that will be held Tuesday, January 31, 2017. The topic of the meeting will be proposed state legislation to change the way school districts are funded. Our state legislators are expected to vote on a bill that will shift the majority of property taxes from real estate-based to an income-and sales tax-based system. The research we have gathered from multiple organizations shows that increasing income and sales tax will not replace property taxes dollar for dollar. According to the Pennsylvania School Boards Association, property taxes are a stable and dependable source of income for school districts, while sales and income taxes can fluctuate greatly. Of utmost concern is that under the new system, there will certainly be more questions as to how our district will fund the great breadth of programs and the quality curriculum that are currently offered to our students. This proposed system of funding would also take away local control of finances from the school community.
Regardless of which side residents fall on this issue, the district is encouraging anyone who feels this topic is important to the future education of our children to attend this important meeting. The meeting will be held January 31 at 7 p.m. in the Fox Chapel Area High School large group instruction room.
District Forum is an advisory committee within the Fox Chapel Area School District.
