Summer Program Offers Engaging STEMM Opportunities

For the fifth summer, Fox Chapel Area High School will host the Western Pennsylvania Summer STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine) Academy. This three-week program is designed for students who will be high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors during the 2016-2017 school year and is open to students from the entire greater Pittsburgh area who have an interest in STEMM careers or a desire to learn more about them.

The academy’s successful 2012 launch has resulted in partnerships with many of the area’s top corporations and leaders. Participating students from various school districts interact with doctors, professors, and business professionals in the STEMM fields through guest speakers, panel discussions, and field experiences at universities, research labs, and STEMM-related businesses.

The Western Pennsylvania Summer STEMM Academy will run June 20-July 7, 2016, at Fox Chapel Area High School. Enrollment is currently open and the total cost is $400.

Additionally, as an added option, the STEMM Sampler program will be offered again this year and is open to students who will be entering ninth-12th grades. This year’s samplers will feature field experiences that focus on environmental sustainability, health sciences, robotics, engineering, and advanced manufacturing. Students can elect to participate in one or all three of the scheduled sampler sessions. The dates are June 27, 28, and 29. The STEMM Sampler program is $30 a day, or $85 for all three days.
