Robotics Teams Place in Combat Bots Competition

Three Fox Chapel Area High School robotics teams recently placed at the Sixth Annual Combat Bots competition. Fox Chapel Area’s robot “Throat Punch” finished third winning more battles then any other bot. The “Throat Punch” robot team included juniors Erik Bothe, Andrew Fugh, Donovan Gorgas, and Jacob Mozurak. Fox Chapel Area’s “Dragon Lord” finished fourth overall and the team members were seniors Jacob Smith and Andrew Wirkowski and junior Christopher Snider. Fox Chapel Area’s all-girls combat team “Marduk” won best engineered Combat Bot and finished seventh overall. The “Marduk” team included seniors Elena Berg and Clara Ferreira, junior Hanna Belotti, and freshman Karissa Becer.

As part of combat bots, students design, test, and engineer the entire robot including the “weapon,” wiring harness, and control systems. The activity incorporates STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education.

The Combat Bots competition was held April 27, 2016, at Pine-Richland High School. Thirty robotics teams from five school districts participated.
