Students Chosen for Band Honors

Several Fox Chapel Area High School and Dorseyville Middle School students were selected to perform with prestigious bands.

•NAfME All-National Concert Band – Fox Chapel Area High School junior Philip Swigon (bassoon) was selected by audition to perform with the prestigious 2015 National Association for Music Education (NAfME) All-National Concert Band. The band was made up of approximately 150 of the top student musicians from all 50 states. The band performed in conjunction with the NAfME annual conference October 28 in Nashville, Tennessee.

•PMEA District 1 Honors Jazz Ensemble – Fox Chapel Area High School junior Robert Wallace (tenor saxophone) was selected by audition to perform with the 2015 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 1 Honors Jazz Ensemble. Each year three jazz ensembles are made up from students who audition from the 90 school districts that make up PMEA District 1. The PMEA Honors Jazz Ensemble performed at Duquesne University in December December.

•Allegheny Valley Honors Band – Several Fox Chapel Area students were selected by audition to perform with the 2016 Allegheny Valley Honors Band. This group is comprised of select student musicians from Fox Chapel Area, Hampton, North Allegheny, Northgate, North Hills, Pine-Richland, Riverview, and Shaler Area school districts. The students chosen were Fox Chapel Area High School seniors Dillan Thomson (French horn) and Olivia Van Dyke (oboe); juniors Nathan Andrud (French horn) and Robert Wallace (tenor saxophone); sophomores Benjamin Franks-Meinert (bassoon), Elizabeth Mountz (oboe), Victoria Mountz (trombone), and Zachary Zytnick (clarinet); and freshmen Isabela Berg (bass clarinet), Justin Breen (trombone), Hannah Kim (flute), Noah Manges (percussion), Alexander Perez (trumpet), and Glenna Van Dyke (clarinet). Dorseyville Middle School students chosen were eighth graders Hanna Chen (flute), Roman DiSanti (trumpet), Hannah Drum (clarinet), Hyelim “Rose” Lee (flute), Michael Mendelson (tuba), Anna Meyer (French horn), Abigail Miller (alto saxophone), Jacob Rendall (French horn), Anzu Sekikawa (clarinet), Kavya Soman (flute), William Wang (trumpet), and Qingging Zhao (clarinet) and seventh grader Joey Wang (clarinet). The Allegheny Valley Honors Band Festival was held at Hampton High School January 21 and 22.

•PMEA District 1 East Band – Six Fox Chapel Area High School students were selected to perform with the 2016 PMEA District 1 East Band. This group was comprised of a premier group of 120 student musicians who auditioned from high schools in Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland counties. The students selected were seniors Dillan Thomson (French horn) and Olivia Van Dyke (oboe), juniors Philip Swigon (bassoon) and Robert Wallace (tenor saxophone), and sophomores Benjamin Franks-Meinert (bassoon), and Elizabeth Mountz (oboe). The PMEA District Band was held January 29 at Norwin High School.

•PMEA Region 1 Honors Band – Five Fox Chapel Area High School students were selected by audition to perform with the 2016 PMEA Region 1 Honors Band. This group is comprised of approximately 120 students from Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Lawrence, Mercer, Washington, and Westmoreland counties. The students selected were seniors Dillan Thomson (French horn) and Olivia Van Dyke (oboe), junior Philip Swigon (bassoon), and sophomores Benjamin Franks-Meinert (bassoon) and Elizabeth Mountz (oboe). The PMEA Region Band was held February 11-13 at Valley High School.

•PMEA All-State Concert Band – Fox Chapel Area High School sophomore Elizabeth Mountz (oboe) was selected by audition to perform with the prestigious 2016 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) All-State Concert Band. The PMEA All-State Concert Band is made up of approximately 120 of the top student musicians from across the state of Pennsylvania. The All-State Festival was held in conjunction with the PMEA Annual In-Service Conference April 30-May 2 in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
