Students Semifinalists in Presidential Scholars Program
Fox Chapel Area High School seniors Mihir Garimella, Darwin Leuba, and Suvir Mirchandani were named semifinalists in the 2017 United States Presidential Scholars Program. A total of 723 semifinalists were selected from across the United States from more than 5,100 candidates. A total of only 16 students from Pennsylvania were named semifinalists in this year’s program.
Inclusion in the Presidential Scholars Program, begun in 1964, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Students are initially selected for the program based on academic achievement and having scored exceptionally well on the SAT or the ACT. The candidates must then complete an application which includes essays, self-assessments, and secondary school reports and transcripts. Candidates are evaluated based on their academic achievement, personal characteristics, leadership and service activities, and the quality and content of their essay.
