High School Students Place at County Envirothon

Three teams of Fox Chapel Area High School students recently placed in the 2018 Allegheny County Envirothon competition. The first-place team members qualified for the state competition and they are seniors Albert Liu and Brandon Brewster, juniors Sofia Porter Bacon and Diana Crookston, and sophomore Sina Shaikh.

Two teams of Fox Chapel Area students placed second and third in the county competition. The second-place team members were seniors Elizabeth Mountz and Delaney Roberts, juniors Eric Gurklis and Nathaniel Roe, and sophomore Olivia Tang. The third-place team members were seniors Anita Bargaje and Aaron Carr, juniors Kevin Falconett and Megan Hayes, and sophomore Hanna Chen.

For the Allegheny County Envirothon, teams of five high school students compete in field testing using their knowledge in five topic areas – soils and land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, and environmental issues. This year’s special topic was Benefits of Grassland and Pastureland Management. A total of 14 teams of students in grades nine-twelve from high schools across Allegheny County participated in the county competition which was held April 27 in South Park. The state competition will be held May 22 and 23 at Susquehanna University and Camp Mount Luther and teams of high school students from more than 65 counties across the state will participate.
