Fox Chapel Area Students Win Regional 2015 Scholastic Art Awards

Several Fox Chapel Area School District students recently won awards for their entries in the Pittsburgh Arts Region of The Scholastic Art Awards of 2015. The show is being held February 7-22 at La Roche College and more than 1,900 entries were received from students from schools across the region.

The Fox Chapel Area High School Gold Key winners were seniors Anna Burns, Stephanie Buzzatto, Maura Clark, Yosra Kandil, Faith Kim (three Gold Keys), Margaret Mertz, and Danielle Woo (two Gold Keys); juniors Griffin Bartley and Madeleine DiMedio; and sophomore Mary Clare O'Connor (seven Gold Keys). The Gold Key winners will have their work sent to New York for national judging where they will be competing with other regional winners from across the United States for national awards. The winners of the national contest will participate in The Scholastic Art Awards National Exhibit.

The Fox Chapel Area Silver Key winners were seniors Stephanie Buzzatto, Shani Caplan-Chernoff, Taylor Edwards, Faith Kim (two Silver Keys), Brendan Valley (two Silver Keys), and Danielle Woo; juniors Charles Fletcher, Hannah Goodman, and Astrid Navas Grijalva; sophomores Hanna Belotti, Emma Cassidy, Moira McCormick, Mary Clare O'Connor, and Krista Spuhler; and Dorseyville Middle School seventh grader Anzu Sekikawa.

Several students from Fox Chapel Area High School received Honorable Mentions for their entries. They are seniors Stephanie Buzzatto, Shani Caplan-Chernoff, Taylor Edwards, Emma Gonzales, Faith Kim (two Honorable Mentions), Edward Marinzel, Elizabeth Ober, Benjamin Smith, and Brendan Valley (four Honorable Mentions); juniors Sarah Bernhard, Amy Burke, Zachary Burkhart, Madeleine DiMedio, Rebecca Francis, Kathleen Kiszka, Tyler McDonough, Astrid Navas Grijalva (two Honorable Mentions), and Sophie Rodosky; sophomores Alysha Dean, Madeleine Doerr, Mary Clare O'Connor (two Honorable Mentions), and Emily Wymore; and freshman Hannah Morton.

The regional award winners were selected by a panel of distinguished judges which included artists, art educators, and art professionals. All of the Fox Chapel Area students will be honored at a special ceremony of the Pittsburgh Arts Region of The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. The ceremony will be held February 22 at La Roche College.

The Fox Chapel Area High School students who entered pieces are under the instruction of art teachers Ron Frank, Joan Marangoni, Jody Shell, Christine Smith, Sarah Stewart, and Amy Wickman. The Dorseyville Middle School students are under the instruction of art teachers Cheryl Etters, Nanci Goldberg, and Mary Jo Montgomery.
