Student One of 35 Selected for National Computing Award

Fox Chapel Area High School senior Sonia Appasamy has received a 2015 Award for Aspirations in Computing given by the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT). She is one of only 35 winners selected from across the nation, and one of only two winners from Pennsylvania. The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing recognizes young women for their aptitude and aspirations in technology and encourages their continued interest in computing. Sonia was chosen from 2,691 applicants from high schools representing all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and overseas military bases.

The 2015 winners will be honored at the Bank of America Technology Stars of the Future Showcase and Awards Ceremony on March 7 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Each winner will receive a $500 cash prize, a laptop computer, and two engraved trophies (one for Sonia and one for Fox Chapel Area High School).

Since 2007, NCWIT has honored more than 3,300 young women and the national sponsor of the program is Bank of America.
