High School Students Win at Regional Tech Challenge
A team of Fox Chapel Area High School students recently won awards at the Southwestern Pennsylvania FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Regional Competition. The team won the Connect Award and placed 13th in the robotics portion of the program. The team members were: senior Gerry Chen; juniors Che Esch, Ishan Khatri, Kristopher Penner, Stephen Polcyn, Sreeroopa Som, and Konrad Urban; and sophomores Mihir Garimella, Donovan Gorgas, and Suvir Mirchandani.
The Fox Chapel Area High School FTC robotics team, Fourth River Robotics, completed a great deal of community outreach, not only to spread the word about FIRST, but specifically to teach middle school students about robotics through a program called RoboClass. The team members taught Dorseyville Middle School students how to program and engineer robots while also teaching them how the principles of robotics could be applied to real life. The team also developed and executed plans to fund their activities – including plans describing how they can give back to their community in the future.
According to the competition judges, "This team has a very diverse membership, which helped them make many connections. Through their efforts they could teach all of us a lesson. This team put forth an amazing program that flowed well into the community."
More than 20 teams from five states competed at the event which was held January 24, 2015, at Shady Side Academy Senior School.
