Rotary Presents Check for Backpacks for Hunger Program
The Rotary Club of Fox Chapel Area announced cash awards this week totaling more than $25,000 to 10 local charities and three international organizations the local Rotary supports. The major grant of $11,000 was presented Monday to the Backpacks for Hunger program that serves some 70 children in the Kerr and Hartwood elementary schools in the Fox Chapel Area School District.
Nine other local charities will receive grants of $1,000 each. They are:
•Aspinwall Meals on Wheels
•Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve
•Boyd Community Center
•Boy Scouts Camp Guyasuta
•Cooper Siegel Library
•North Hills Community Outreach
•St. Margaret Foundation
•St. Vincent de Paul
•Volunteers of America / All of Us Care
The local Rotary also earmarked grants to:
•Fox Chapel Rotary's International Fund: $2,700
•TracChairs for Veterans: $1,000 (to be supplemented by individual members)
•Rotary International's Polio Plus Campaign: $1,500
George Dull, Rotary president, said all of the money was raised this spring at the Rotary Golf Classic outing and raffle May 18 at River Forest Country Club.
"We had record participation in the golf event and a tremendous response from our corporate sponsors," Dull said. "We are most pleased to be able to support so many worthy charities and civic organizations."
The Backpacks for Hunger program was started two years ago at Kerr Elementary by School Counselor Sue Douglas and at Hartwood Elementary by School Counselor Janet Fazzini. Teachers, the principals and parent organizations joined in to fund the program that provides nutritious, easy-to-prepare weekend food for some 70 school children each Friday during the school year.
